A group of Islamist rebels claimed they seized a Syrian army base in Idlib province Monday after a Nusra Front militant drove a vehicle full of explosives into the site, according to Reuters.
The alleged capture of Qarmeed camp could be a major setback for Bashar al-Assad’s army, however, Syrian state media confirmed airstrikes against the militants inflicted heavy casualties, but made no mention of the base being captured.
“A truck with two tonnes of explosives penetrated one of the entrances of the camp that made it easier to take over the camp,” a rebel commander told Reuters via Skype.
The coalition of militants seized Idlib city in March after forming an alliance with al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front, Ahrar al-Sham and Jund al-Aqsa.
