The Jetta GLI sports sedan adds dynamism to the Volkswagen Middle East lineup
2008 Volkswagen Middle East has recently introduced to the region the most powerful Jetta, the Jetta GLI, which breathes new passion and liveliness into the globally successful series. This Jetta GLI adds to the Volkswagen ground-breaking performance line-up, offering enthusiasts a modern and dynamic sports sedan.
The Jetta GLI is powered by 200 hp / 4 cylinder engine, develops a maximum torque of 207 Newton metres available from just 1,800 rpm all the way through to 5,000 rpm. The 1,497 kg Jetta GLI leaps forward from 0-100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds making it not just a comfortable cruiser but a top quality sporty sedan as well.
The Jetta GLI is available with a six-speed automatic DSG transmission which utilises direct shift gear changes through manual and automatic settings. For automatic shifts, drivers can drop the selector into “Drive” and the transmission operates like an advanced six-speed automatic transmission. For manual shifts, a flick of a shift paddle on the steering wheel is all it takes. There is no clutch pedal; shifting is accomplished with dual clutches that take turns moving the next gear – up or down. The result is no power-transfer loss during up-shifts and computer-matched revs for perfect downshifts every time. Gear changes are almost imperceptible, and acceleration is effortless.
Maximum power with minimal consumption has made the Volkswagen TSI four cylinders synonymous with a new generation of the most fuel-efficient and at the same time sporty Volkswagen engines. This is also true for the Jetta GLI, fuel economy in this vehicle is 12 km per litre in motorway driving and 9 km per litre in city with the DSG transmission, making it one of the most economical sporty sedans of its class.
Distinguishing exterior styling cues on the Jetta GLI are subtle and include a honeycomb grille with a red pinstripe centered just below the auto-leveling and high intensity Xenon headlights. Lower side-body trim is blacked out and red calipers peer through the spokes of the alloy wheels performance tires.
In the rear, big round taillights wrapped in thin chrome accents show off inset white back-up lights and amber turn signals. Underneath, dual stainless exhaust tips poke out from just below the rear lower valance. Front and rear GLI badges add the finishing touch to this exhilarating exterior.
Front seats are eight-way adjustable sport seats that offer exceptional support and comfort, for both long and short drives. Interior trim is aluminum, right down to the foot pedals. Silver rings individualise the instrument gauges and silver-finish buttons front the in-dash radio.
A Jetta GLI-model exclusive is the thickly padded, F1-style flat-bottom steering wheel, with tilt-and-telescope adjustment. The flat-bottom “circle” helps drivers keep track of how far they have turned the wheel.
The Jetta GLI is equipped with a whole range of systems that ensure passive and active safety including dual front airbag supplemental restraints, front-side airbag supplemental restraints, and Side Curtain Protection airbag supplemental restraints providing added protection for front and rear outboard-seat passengers. As an option, a rear-passenger side-airbag can be provided.
The Jetta GLI is also equipped with high end technologies that set new standards to its segment such as the advanced Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) which is offered along with traction control. Additionally, the Servotronic electromechanical steering offers tight and sporty steering that provides excellent control. Thicker anti-roll bars in the front and rear work to keep the car planted in the corners.
Standard equipment in the Jetta GLI includes a tire pressure monitoring system, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatically dimming interior mirror and bi-Xenon head lights.
