Jordanian authorities on Wednesday handed down jail sentences to seven Jordanians and one Syrian for planning attacks on US soldiers in the country and on the Israeli embassy, a judicial source told AFP.

The attacks had been planned against US service personnel at al-Moaqar military base in Jordan in 2006 and against the Israeli embassy in Amman in 2008, AFP reported.

The charges included "plotting to commit a terrorist act, and possession of weapons and explosives for use" in those acts.

The Jordanians were arrested in May 2014, but the Syrian in question was tried in absentia.

The leader of the group was handed a 10-year term with hard labor, while others were jailed for between two and three year under the same conditions.

The Syrian was sentenced to 15 years, AFP reported.
