Iran's President Mohammad Khatami Wednesday voiced apprehension over the prevailing situation in Lebanon, warning of Israeli attempts to use the country as a launching pad to take over the whole Middle East region.

"We believe not only Lebanon, but the entire Middle East region, has entered a sensitive and decisive moment," he said in a meeting with the vice president of Lebanon's Higher Shia Council, Abdel-Amir Qabalan.

According to IRNA, Khatami described Lebanon a "gateway through which the Zionists and certain superpowers want to control the entire Middle East." "They must not be allowed to achieve their objectives through stoking up internal differences and weakening resistance (in Lebanon)," the Iranian leader stated.
