Kuwait’s Emir Shaikh Jaber Al Sabah has ordered the release of a Bahraini opposition figure held in a Kuwaiti for more than 18 months, reported the Gulf Daily.
Adel Jassem Mohammad al-Haiki has been serving a three-year jail term along with three other Bahraini Shiite opposition members who were arrested in Kuwait in 1998 and charged with subversive activities against Manama, said the Daily.
The three others were released recently after completing their sentences.
Haiki was initially acquitted by the criminal court, but was convicted by the appeals court in October 1999, said AFP.
The chairman of parliament's human rights committee, Abdul Mohsen Jamal, appealed for the release of Haiki on Sunday.
A Bahraini national charter for democratic reforms, including restoring parliament after a 26-year break, won huge support in a mid-February referendum.
Manama declared a general amnesty before the vote, prompting several opposition leaders to return to Bahrain, and released all political prisoners – Albawaba.com
