Kuwaiti Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah, termed on Wednesday the UN Security Council's resolution to decrease sanctions on Iraq a significant event for ending hardships of the Iraqi people.
Sheikh Mohammed, in a statement to journalists upon his departure to the Saudi Kingdom, to participate in a meeting of the GCC foreign ministers due Wednesday, said the council's adoption of the decision constituted a very important step for easing the hardships of the people of Iraq.
According to Kuwait News Agency, al-Sabah re-affirmed Kuwait's support for any action aimed at ending the suffering of the Iraqi people and extended hope that the decision might lead to improving the standard of living in Iraq.
Sheikh Mohammed indicated that the resolution specified commodities that could be used for non-peaceful purposes, in accordance with the compelling chapter seven of the UN charter.
Furthermore, the Kuwaiti Minister affirmed the GCC states' support for the Arab peace initiative, adopted at the recent Arab summit in Beirut.
He also spoke of the significance of the GCC ministerial meeting due to be held ahead of the annual GCC consultative summit later this month, and noted that it would be held amidst major developments, namely the recent visit to the U.S. by the Saudi crown prince. He also reiterated Kuwait's support for his efforts to establish peace throughout the region. (Albawaba.com)
