Iraqi police and health officials on Tuesday said huge blasts at apartment buildings across the capital have killed at least 49 people and injured more than 160. According to the AP, police and medical officials said the death toll was at least 49, and women and children were among those killed.
Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, an Iraqi military spokesman for Baghdad's operations command center, conveyed the attackers detonated explosives using homemade bombs and, in one case, a car packed. According to him, there were at least seven blasts. Al-Moussawi blamed al-Qaeda in Iraq for the blasts and said Iraq was in a "state of war" with terrorists. He said most of the buildings are two stories, but one in the Allawi district downtown was five stories.
