At least nine die in car blast south of Baghdad

At least nine persons died and 13 injured on Wednesday evening when a suicide bomber rammed a car into a checkpoint south of Baghdad, a National Guard officer said.


According to Reuters, he said the attacker drove his car into the checkpoint, on the northeastern entrance to the town of Latifiya. The huge explosion destroyed several vehicles in the area.


US Marines said the blast apparently involved a fuel tanker.


National Guards and police as well as civilians were among the victims, the National Guard officer said.
