Hezbollah has abandoned checkpoints it had established in several areas across Lebanon, caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said in remarks published Wednesday.
“There are no more Hezbollah checkpoints on Lebanese territory,” Charbel told An-Nahar newspaper.
“I was informed of Hezbollah’s decision to abandon checkpoints in Nabatieh and this indeed took place yesterday, where security has become the responsibility of the security forces,” Charbel added.
Police on Tuesday took over checkpoints manned by Hezbollah in Nabatieh, checking vehicles and trucks arriving in the southern city.
Hezbollah had boosted security measures in the south and the capital following a spate of deadly car bombings that targeted the group’s stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Charbel dismissed rumors that Hezbollah set up checkpoints around the Palestinian refugee camp of Burj al-Barajneh in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
“Only security forces’ checkpoints are around the camp,” he stressed.
