Hizbullah deputy chief Sheikh Naim Qassem warned that the opposition would take the "appropriate measures" in time if the ruling March 14 bloc resorted to electing a president by a simple majority.
Qassem, who described the current situation as very delicate and unclear, noted he feared that the period from now until the end of President Emile Lahoud's term "will not be enough to change March 14's anti-consensus stance."
In an interview published Thursday by An Nahar newspaper, Qassem said that in the event that March 14 violated the constitution and Prime Minister Fuad Saniora's "illegitimate" government remained in power, Hizbullah and the other opposition parties will "take the appropriate measures in time."
Asked about the possibility of holding talks between Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah and parliamentary majority leader Saad Hariri, Qassem said Hizbullah welcomes dialouge. Qassem, however, indicated that "circumstances" do not allow such a meeting to take place.
