Report details company’s efforts and progress in “Life’s Good When It’s Green”
LG Electronics (LG), a leader in consumer electronics and mobile communications, has published its 2009 Environmental Report (http://www.lge.com/sustainability) containing details of the company’s environmentally-focused initiatives and progress to date.

After having published two previous sustainability publications which included LG’s environmental efforts, the company recognized the need to share more details of its environmental expertise based on its experience as a manufacturing and technology company. LG decided a stand-alone Environmental Report, separate from its Sustainability Report, would give the subject matter more attention.

In the foreword, LG Electronics’ Vice Chairman and CEO Yong Nam states how LG management and employees are united in carrying out activities to reduce waste during the manufacturing and product development process. LG will be a leader “in achieving sustainable growth and creating a green future,” he says.

On his part, the Managing Director of LG Electronics Levant, Mr. Kevin Cha, said, “We, at LG Electronics, are fully committed to the social and environmental responsibility, manifested by the already-launched programs addressing the environmental violations and challenges. We also aim at achieving a turning point in our efforts to enhance the public awareness on that regard. LG is always keen to guarantee its members’ devotion to protect the environment, through their involvement in the company’s awareness programs. By attaining this target, we will certainly achieve further successes in our endeavour to protect the natural milieu.”

The 70-page 2009 Environmental Report is arranged into four sections — Green Management, Green Products Strategy, Green Manufacturing and Green Communication. The Environmental Report will be published once a year by the Eco Strategy Team, which is headed by the office of the Chief Technology Officer. Related data will be gathered and analyzed based on the prior years’ results.

The report includes information from the entire LG Electronics network, which includes 84 overseas subsidiaries.

LG Electronics first declared its commitment to the environment with its Cleaner Environment campaign launched in 1994. The slogan changed to Life’s Good when it’s Green this year as LG announced more ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The program addresses production and product areas separately, with a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 150,000 tons for production and 30 million tons for product development. The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will take place gradually throughout the entire product lifecycle and includes raw materials, logistics, product utility, waste and other processes.

LG Electronics received an international certification for its greenhouse gas inventory last December, marking a first for the electronics industry in Korea.
