A Libyan television journalist who had been covering the fighting between Islamist militias and pro-government forces in Libya's second city of Benghazi has been shot dead, AFP has reported.

Muftah al-Qatrani, director of private production company Al-Anwar, was assasinated on Wednesday, an interior ministry official told AFP.

"Friends who visited his office found him dead on a chair, covered in blood," the official said.

He was killed by a gunshot to the head and an inquiry into the killing has been launched.

"No neighbors or surrounding businesses had any idea what had happened and no weapon was found near the body," one witness said.

Libya descended into chaos in the midst of the 2011 Arab Spring.
