ALBAWABA - Lebanese group Hezbollah announced that Sheikh Naim Qassem is the new Secretary-general after the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah.

Qassem is a Lebanese Shia cleric and politician and has served as the deputy secretary-general of Hezbollah since 1991.

Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary-general of the Hezbollah movement was killed in a series of airstrikes carried out by Israel targeting six buildings including the headquarters of the Iranian-backed group - on Sept. 27.

The Israeli army confirmed on Sept. 28 the killing of Nasrallah in the Sept. 27 airstrike on the group's central command headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs.

A month after the assassination of Nasrallah, the Iranian-backed group released a statement officially announcing Naim Qassem as the new secretary-general of Hezbollah.

Hashem Safieddine was the one who was likely to be Nasrallah's successor, however, he was also killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut in early October.

Israel announced the death of Hashem Safieddine on Oct. 22 and two days after the Israeli army's announcement, Hezbollah confirmed his death.
