ALBAWABA- Nawaf Salam has secured the backing of a majority of Lebanese MPs, positioning him as Lebanon's next prime minister. With no less than 70 parliamentary votes, Salam is set to form the new government.
His selection comes just days after the election of Joseph Aoun as president, ending years of political deadlock caused by disputes among Lebanon's political factions.
These political breakthroughs follow significant developments after the recent Hezbollah-Israel conflict, during which top Hezbollah leaders were assassinated, and the group suffered severe damage.
The aftermath prompted a US- and France-led initiative, supported by other nations, to broker a ceasefire and a political roadmap for Lebanon’s future.
Now chosen as Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam is a distinguished Lebanese diplomat, jurist, and academic with a long-standing career in international law and diplomacy.
Born in Beirut on December 15, 1953, he holds advanced degrees from prestigious institutions, including a Doctorate from Sciences Po in Paris, a Doctorate in History from the Sorbonne, and an LL.M. from Harvard University.
Salam served as Lebanon's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2007 to 2017. During his tenure, he held prominent roles such as President of the Security Council and Vice President of the General Assembly.
In 2017, he was elected as a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), serving a nine-year term from 2018 to 2027, and was later elected as ICJ President in February 2024.
