Al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front said Wednesday it will be ruling the northwestern city of Idlib with Islamic sharia law, Reuters reported.
The announcement comes days after opposition fighters had taken over the Syrian city, only the second provincial capital to have been claimed by rebel groups after Daesh took control of Raqqa.
Nusra Front leader Abu Mohamad al-Golani said Idlib residents would be treated well by the ruling factions.
"We salute the people of Idlib and their stand with their sons ... God willing they will enjoy the justice of sharia, which will preserve their religion and their blood," he said in an audio recording posted online.
The takeover was followed by more Syrians fleeing the city as they feared government retaliation.
