An Iraqi national has been executed by lethal injection for the 1992 murders of his estranged wife and her uncle, Oklahoma officials said Friday.
Sahib Al-Mosawi's death sentence was carried out shortly after 9:00 pm Thursday (0300 GMT Friday) at Oklahoma State Penitentiary at McAlester, southeast of Oklahoma City, a spokesman for the state corrections department said.
The 53-year-old had been on death row since 1994 following his conviction of the stabbing deaths of his wife Inaam Al-Nashi, 26, and her uncle Mohammad Al-Nashi, 45.
Al-Mosawi met his bride, who was also from Iraq, at a refugee camp in Saudi Arabia, according to the Oklahoma Attorney General's office.
The couple married in Oklahoma City after they moved to the United States, but the arranged marriage ran into trouble and Al-Nashi moved in with her uncle Mohammad.
On November 28, 1992, Al-Mosawi went to the house of his wife's uncle, got into a tussle with her uncle and stabbed him, his wife and her sister Fatima.
Fatima survived.
Al-Mosawi was the 18th person executed in Oklahoma this year, and the 48th since the state resumed capital punishment in 1990, according to Charlie Price spokesman for the attorney general's office -- OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (AFP)
