Italian authorities on Monday recovered the bodies of 24 migrants who were aboard a boat that capsized off the coast of Libya Sunday, reported Reuters.

Officials stated that there may have been at least 700 people aboard the boat, however one survivor who was brought by emergency teams to a Sicily hospital told authorities that the number was much higher, at around 950 passengers. The survivor claimed that the boat capsized when passengers gathered on one side to attract attention from a passing ship, according to Reuters.

The Italian coast guard told Reuters that 28 people had been rescued from the site of the disaster, and that they will be transported by boat to Italy Monday.

Sunday’s disaster is part of an ongoing crisis facing migrants who choose to travel by boat to a better life in Europe.  International Organisation for Migration has estimated that around 900 people have died so far in the crisis, not including the possible deaths from Sunday.
