Over 1,000 people, mostly extremist militants, have been killed in fighting in the Syrian town of Kobani, AFP reports.

Islamic State militants launched an offensive on the city in mid-September.

“At least 1,013 people have been killed in fighting in Ain al Arab from the beginning of the offensive till last night,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Of those killed, 609 were ISIL extremists, while 363 were members of the Kurdish people’s Protection Units. Twenty-four civilians were among the dead. The toll for extremists excludes those killed in U.S.–led air strikes.

ISIL began taking over large swathes of land in Iraq and Syria in June. Kurdish forces, aided by U.S.-led air strikes, have been battling the extremists for months.
