PA unity government talks suspended

Talks on a Palestinian unity government have been suspended, and no new meetings are scheduled, a senior aide to President Mahmoud Abbas said Monday.

Abbas had met repeatedly Sunday night with Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas to discuss the distribution of government portfolios among Hamas and Fatah party. However, serious disagreements emerged, the AP reported.

According to Abbas' aide Nabil Amr, no progress has been made in recent days. "We would say talks are suspended now," Amr told a news conference. He added much work remains to be done. "What we have agreed upon is only the first mile over the 1,000-mile road," Amr conveyed.

"No one is satisfied with the results that we have reached up until now. Hamas should be more cooperative on the make-up of the government and its platform," Amr said.
