At a meeting on Thursday, a group of 14 Palestinian factions agreed to take part in a joint operation along with the Syrian military to drive out Daesh militants from the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp, located in southern Damascus.

Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Ahmed Majdalani told AFP that the Palestinian factions will back “a security solution that will be carried out in partnership with the Syrian state” and that the operation’s main priority will be the security of civilians.

Palestinian movement Hamas was absent from the meeting, according to officials.

Daesh militants overran Yarmouk last week, capturing parts of the area.

The crisis in Syria has devastated the Palestinian refugee camp since 2012.  Residents have faced government shelling as well as severe shortages of food and medicine, sparking international humanitarian concern.  Many of the camp's 160,000 Palestinian residents have managed to flee, but around 18,000 still remain.
