The Algerian President, Bouteflika has decided to extend his prerogative to grant Presidential pardons to 5 065 detainees, according to a press statement from the President’s office. Such a move is traditional on Muslim festivals, such as Aïd El-Adha, which is approaching. The scale of the pardon however is particularly large.
The President took care, however, to exclude anyone sentenced for terrorist activity or were involved in an act of murder or violence. Also excluded are crimes of corruption and drug smuggling.
