ALBAWABA - The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, arrived at Damascus International Airport in Syria, Thursday, and became the first Arab leader to arrive in Syria.

Sheikh Tamim Al Thani was welcomed by Ahmed al-Sharaa, who was announced yesterday as Syria's transitional president, according to the country's military command.

Earlier in January, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani landed in Syria and met with al-Sharaa in the Syrian capital, Damascus over a month after ousting the former Syrian regime.

Prior to the Qatari official's official visit to Syria, Doha announced reopening its embassy in Syria after it was closed since 2011.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani paid an official trip, earlier this month, to Qatar and met with Qatari officials in Doha.

It is worth highlighting that on Nov. 27, 2024, the Syrian opposition announced an operation against the former Syrian regime and ex-President Bashar Assad and was able to control the capital Damascus on Dec. 8, 2024, and oust the former regime.

Bashar Assad, ex-leader of Syria, fled to Russia before the entering of Syrian rebels into the capital.
