Qatar's bid to become medical research hub
Qatar to have biggest regional pavilion at Arab Health
Under the banner "Leading the Change," Qatar is staking its claim as a leading regional and international hub for quality medical research, healthcare training, clinical practice at the Arab Health exhibition which opens today (26 January 2009) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Headed by the Ministry of Health, a consortium of leading medical and educational institutions and organisations from Qatar is mounting the biggest pavilion of any Arabian Gulf country at this week's Arab Health. With a floor area in excess of 390 square metres, the Qatar pavilion - based on the double helix of DNA - is one of the biggest stands at the show.
With a $7.9 billion endowment from the Emir His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Qatar Foundation is constructing Sidra Medical and Research ,Center due to open in late 2011.which will form with Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, the first academic medical centre of its kind in the region for clinical care, medical education and biomedical research
Details of further groundbreaking developments and initiatives in Qatar's industry-leading healthcare strategy will be revealed during the course of this week's Arab Health show, including a bio-medical research programme at the frontiers of science; and a major regional breakthrough in robotic surgery.
Taking part on the stand to explain their contribution to Qatar's "Leading the Change" strategy will be:
• Hamad Medical Corporation – which delivers healthcare in Qatar through five hospitals and an emergency medical service
• Aspetar – Qatar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital – the region's first of its kind
• Qatar University – which has announced Qatar's first and the region's latest College of Pharmacy
• University of Calgary Qatar – a research-intensive institution for nurse education
• College of the North Atlantic Qatar – which offers a range of specialist training in a variety of health professions
• Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar – representing the first US University to offers its medical doctorate degree overseas.
Qatar Science and Technology Park – home to and companies from around the world.
• The Qatar Diabetes Association
"Qatar is investing in future generations and inspiring generations of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and health scientists," said Abdul Razak Al-Kubaisi, Assistant Managing Director Administration and Finance, Hamad Medical Corporation.
