ALBAWABA - Rabbi Eli Schlanger was named as among the 10 killed in a shooting attack at Bondi Beach, Australia, local media confirmed.
According to Australian sources, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a Chabad emissary, was at a celebration to mark the first day of the Jewish festival, Hanukkah.
More than 2,000 people were celebrating Hanukkah when two gunmen started shooting at the crowd, killing at least 10 and wounding 11 others.
According to the Rabbi's social media, Schlanger studied at Central Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim Lubavitch and Yeshiva Brunoy, France.
One of the shooters was identified as Naveed Akram, the police said.
The New South Wales police revealed that one suspect was killed at the scene, while the other was injured and is being treated. The motivation of the attack has not been disclosed yet.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the Bondi Beach shooting, saying, "At these very moments, our sisters and brothers in Sydney, Australia, have been attacked by vile terrorists in a very cruel attack on Jews."
"Strongly condemn the ghastly terrorist attack carried out today at Bondi Beach, Australia, targeting people celebrating the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. On behalf of the people of India, I extend my sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. We stand in solidarity with the people of Australia in this hour of grief. India has zero tolerance towards terrorism and supports the fight against all forms and manifestations of terrorism," Indian PM Narendra Modi wrote.
