Refugee boat sinks off Turkish coast, 11 dead

At least 11 people, including three children drowned when a boat carrying refugees capsized off Turkey’s southwestern Aydin province Tuesday, Turkish coast guard sources said.

According to the sources, Turkish coast guards noticed the refugees trying to reach Greece during one of its routine patrol in the area.

Seven refugees were also rescued, who were rushed to the hospital.

A search-and-rescue operation continues in the area to look for more survivors.

According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 781,000 migrants have arrived in Greece by sea since the start of the year, mostly from Turkey. There were 632 deaths in the Aegean up to Dec. 14.

According to the UN’s refugee agency, more than 950,000 people have reached Europe by sea this year.
