Iraq has exhumed the remains of 597 believed to be victims of Daesh's Speicher massacre, AFP reported Wednesday.

Human Rights Minister Mohammed al-Bayati said the 600 people were believed to be killed by Daesh (ISIS) extremists in June 2014, when they captured hundreds of young Shiite recruits from Speicher military base and executed them in several areas near Tikrit. Up to 1,700 were believed to have been killed.

Daesh later released the footage of the execution that showed them lining up the men in several locations. Some of the victims were pushed into the Tigris river, while others were buried and later discovered by government forces when they retook Tikrit
