Britain has strongly advised the United States against attacking Iraq, warning that it risked intensifying the conflicts in Afghanistan, Israel and Kashmir, senior defense and diplomatic sources told The Independent.
According to this report, British ministers and officials believe that a new war would "contaminate" the other crises. "These are issues the Americans appear not to have considered," said one official.
Additionally, they have serious reservations about President George Bush's demand for a "regime change" in Baghdad because, London believes, “no alternative regime has been identified for such a change to take place,” the British newspaper said.
Meanwhile, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on Thursday expressed his hope that Britain would not follow the "foolish" US policy of launching military actions against his country. During a meeting with visiting British Labor lawmaker George Galloway, Saddam said he hoped that "Britain would not participate in the aggression against Iraq and stay away from the foolish American policy," the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.
Galloway, on his part, told Saddam that his hope is shared by some British people. He informed the Iraqi president of the "activities taken by some political and trade union figures in Britain" to call on the British people to oppose London's participation in the US aggression against Iraq, INA said.
