A former Palestinian police officer turned himself into Palestinian security forces Friday in the West Bank town of Nablus for involvement in a violent fight earlier this month between two rival groups in which two people were killed, Israeli sources said.
Haaretz newspaper quoted the sources as telling Israel Radio that Ahmed Tabuk turned himself in after having heard that Palestinian President Yasser Arafat had given the order to have him “killed.”
On July 11, two people were killed, including an 11-year-old boy, and 11 hurt in a gunbattle between two groups of Palestinians following a dispute in the West Bank city of Nablus.
Firas al-Aghbar, 11, and Khaireddin Masri, 20, were killed by stray bullets during the four-hour battle which also saw the town center wrecked.
The clash started when Tabuk, a former Palestinian policeman, fired on two other people, seriously wounding them, AFP said at the time.
Swearing revenge, relations and neighbors of the two wounded men, who lived in a refugee camp near Nablus, marched on the town.
Including other policemen, they clashed with Tabuk's gang of about 20 men.
The Palestinian territories are awash with guns, particularly since the start of the Palestinian uprising against Israeli rule which broke out in September – Albawaba.com
