Police beat Larbi Ben Moncef Hichri from the "El Jabbana" (cemetery) quarter of the old city of Tunis to death Sunday November 7, according to the internet publication Tunezine. He was suspected of stealing a mobile phone from a woman. Relatives claim the woman in question was a policewoman and this explains the disproportionate use of force both in chasing Larbi and his eventual death.
His family claimed just as they were to sit down to break the Ramadan fast, between 12 and 15 police agents raided the house and proceeded to beat Larbi to death and then left. The authorities have so far declined to comment but according to local press sources, an internal enquiry is underway. (albawaba.com)
