Riots near al Aqsa after Israel bars entry

Israeli police said Palestinian protesters hurled rocks and bottles at Israeli police after being barred from al Aqsa complex in Jerusalem. According to the AP, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby conveyed police have dispersed some 150 demonstrators who had gathered near the compound.

 

According to Ben-Ruby, the unrest continued at a nearby east Jerusalem neighborhood and three men have been detained. Earlier Sunday, Israeli police decided to bar entry of to the complex.

 

According to witnesses and Palestinian and Israeli officials, cited by Reuters, police fired tear gas against the Palestinians. Palestinian medical sources said nine people were treated for minor injuries including tear gas inhalation. Israel said one policeman was hurt by a rock.

 

Meanwhile, a Palestinian official, Khatem Abdel Khader, who is in charge of Jerusalem, was detained by Israeli police "on suspicion he was trying to incite protests at the site."
