Egyptian officials said Tuesday that a roadside bomb struck a military vehicle in the northern Sinai Peninsula, killing six soldiers, the Associated Press reported.

The officials also told the AP that the attack wounded another six soldiers. The officials requested anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Egyptian security forces have been battling a Daesh-affiliated insurgency in the peninsula.

The area has long been restive for militants, but the attacks have become much more frequent since the 2013 ouster of President Mohammed Morsi.
