Russia expressed on Saturday understanding of a call by the foreign ministers of the organization of Islamic conference (OIC) for reaching a political settlement in the breakaway republic of Chechnya, reported Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
The Russian foreign ministry said in a statement faxed to the agency that Russia shares the OIC's concern regarding the complex human situation in Chechnya, where Russian forces have been launching a war to put down an independence campaign by Chechen fighters.
The OIC foreign ministers urged Russia at the end of their five-day conference in Kuala Lumpur on Friday to opt for a military settlement of the Chechen conflict, said the agency.
The statement said the Russian leadership is seeking a political settlement and cited the appointment of the mufti (religious guide) of Chechnya as interim governor of the republic as a sound proof to its quest, KUNA said - Albawaba.com
