A Russian delegation is due to fly out soon to Iran to discuss the delivery of nuclear fuel to the Russian-built Bushehr power station in southern Iran, which is a major point of disaccord in the new US-Russian alliance.

Minister for Atomic Energy Alexander Rumiantsev, quoted by Interfax news agency, said late Saturday Moscow was also negotiating the construction of further nuclear reactors for the plant.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Saturday his government remained concerned that Russian support for Iranian civil nuclear projects could be seen as helping Iran towards nuclear weapons technology.

"There is a disagreement between us and the Russians about the nature of some of their activities," Powell told a briefing in Saint Petersburg following a summit between Presidents Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush.

Putin and Bush, who signed a landmark nuclear disarmament treaty at their Kremlin summit Friday, remained at odds over the issue this weekend.

Iran ordered the 800 million dollar Bushehr power station from Moscow in 1993. It currently has just one reactor, and is to go on stream in September 2003. (Albawaba.com)
