Jordanian police confirmed to Roya News that the security guard monitoring former Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour's residents was found dead on Wednesday morning.

A police source told Roya News that the cause of death was a gunshot, apparently from the security officer's own machine gun. The officer, named as "Hamza" in preliminary reports, was discovered inside his guard post with a gunshot wound in his chest.

The weapon has been submitted to the criminal investigation unit as evidence.

Abdullah Ensour was the Prime Minister of Jordan from October 2012 to May 2016. The Jordanian government provides home security for retired prime ministers. Ensour released a statement offering his condolences on his Facebook page:

“May god rest Hamza’s soul in heaven, and his colleagues and family the patience; I share my condolences to them. I am following up the primary info regarding this tragic accident over the phone as I am offshore now, hoping that the investigation results will appear quick and fast by our brilliant investigators."

The investigation of the death is ongoing. At this time, the police do not believe it was an intended attack on the former prime minister.
