SEHA announced today the successful implementation of a new state-of-the- art Electronic Medical Record (EMR) solution at Tawam Hospital in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), is a 468-bed tertiary care hospital owned and operated by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company. In addition to Tawam Hospital, five additional hospitals and 12 clinics throughout the Emirate of Abu Dhabi will implement the new EMR system in the 2008-2009 timeframe. The new system will eventually link all 11 SEHA hospitals and more than 39 clinics in Abu Dhabi.

H.E. Dr. Ahmed Al Mazrouei, Chairman of SEHA said, “I congratulate all the members of the project team of SEHA and Tawam.  I also salute our partners who have helped bring this system live so successfully.  This milestone is the first in a series of steps to automate medical recordkeeping and other patient systems.  We are harnessing technology to improve efficiency and safety in our hospitals and building on the Emirate’s e-government initiative.”
Saif Al Qubaisi, Managing Director, SEHA added, “By the end of 2009 the system will be completely implemented in all SEHA facilities.  By creating a unified electronic medical record (EMR) for our hospitals and clinics, a patient can utilize the services of any SEHA facility. The new EMR system will help ensure patient information is available when- and wherever a SEHA provider needs it. This system will noticeably accelerate the creation and management of patient records. It will always be up to date and complete.  It is state-of-the-art.”
The project is part of a series of programs that SEHA is implementing to enhance the overall healthcare environment in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. SEHA’s new programs are meant to help improve patient safety and quality of care when using SEHA healthcare facilities. SEHA is implementing the Cerner Millennium® healthcare information technology (HIT) computing platform.  Perot Systems functions as Project Manager.  Gulf Business Machines (GBM) provided the hardware while CERNER and Etisalat provided the secure network and data center.
Carl V. Stanifer, CEO of SEHA, stated: "At SEHA, our goal is to provide all our patients with the best healthcare available. We are continually reviewing opportunities to develop ways to improve the patient experience. The implementation of the EMR technology is a great success at Tawam Hospital and it is already showing results, facilitating information access for physicians and consequently improving the quality of patient care. As these systems are introduced across the SEHA system, this successful technological advancement will benefit all our patients in the future."
Commenting on the new system, Michael Heindel, CEO of Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine, added, "This project quite simply reflects the government's initiatives in making our healthcare system better and safer by using the latest technology. We are truly proud of the successful launch of this system, and are delighted to see this project implemented after months of studies, planning and hard work."
SEHA is committed to implementing a system-wide EMR for all of its hospitals and clinics as part of its vision to create a connected healthcare system and to improve the quality of care in Abu Dhabi. SEHA chose Cerner® as its HIT supplier because of Cerner’s flexible platform, significant presence in and commitment to the UAE, and ability to support large scale implementations.
The Cerner Millennium solutions implemented at Tawam Hospital automate processes in the radiology, pathology, pharmacy, surgery, emergency, and scheduling and registration departments. Clinicians at Tawam Hospital are using this new healthcare computing platform to document care and submit orders in the EMR. The hospital is also implementing solutions to create a closed-loop medication administration process, which helps avoid harmful medication errors and improve patient safety.
