Tawam Hospital, the UAE and Gulf region’s premier healthcare provider, will host a high level delegation of visiting Otolaryngologists during a one day medical education symposium on January 23, 2007.  The delegation, comprised of experts from Johns Hopkins Medicine, will visit the Al-Ain based medical facility to give medical lectures regarding the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose, throat, head and neck disorders. The 469-bed Tawam Hospital is the Middle East’s first medical facility with affiliation to Johns Hopkins Medicine and is preferred for the specialist treatment it offers, particularly in oncology, family medicine, fertility services and intensive care.

The symposium is the latest initiative from Tawam Hospital directed at increasing the number of specialties it can offer through its affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine, the globally renowned health care provider based in Baltimore in the United States.

The symposium will be held only days before the Arab Health conference and exhibition, expected to attract a consortium of international medical industry experts when it is held at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre from January 29 – February 1.  The four day event is the premier health care exhibition for the Middle East, showcasing technological developments aimed at contributing to the spread of advanced medical solutions.

Commenting on the symposium, Mr Michael Heindel, CEO, Tawam Hospital said, “The symposium is a great opportunity for medical experts to share technological developments, scientific breakthroughs and innovative approaches to contribute to the spread of the world’s best international healthcare practices.  Tawam Hospital, in association with Johns Hopkins, is committed to facilitating in knowledge transfer so that the UAE’s regional patients can avail of world class treatment at affordable costs, without having to leave the UAE.”

“What better way to usher in Arab health than to have America’s best hospital send over several of its most senior administrators and clinicians to visit the UAE,” Mr Heindel added.

The team of visiting experts is headed by Dr. Charles W. Cummings, Vice President – Executive Medical Director of Johns Hopkins Medicine International.  Other delegates will include Dr Howard Francis, a cochlear implant specialist and expert in developing new therapies for acquired deafness; Dr Nasir Bhatti, an expert in airway disorders, sinus disease, nasal problems and swallowing problems; and Dr Ralf Tufano, a head and neck surgeon specialising in thyroid cancer, cancers of the head and neck, tumours of the oral cavity, oropharynx, neck skull base, salivary glands, thyroid and parathyroid disorders and tumors.
The Dean of Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Michael Klag, will also be joining the delegation.  Klag’s pioneering studies in kidney disease, epidemiology and renal disease have laid the foundations for subsequent studies and contributed to improved understanding of how characteristics in young adulthood influence health and disease in later life.
