Mining-related fatalities remain a tragic and recurring issue in Iran. One of the deadliest incidents in recent years occurred on September 22 last year, when a methane gas explosion claimed the lives of 50 miners and injured 16 others in a coal mine in Tabas, eastern Iran.
A day prior to the blast, workers had reportedly warned management about a strong smell of gas in the tunnels—yet operations continued as usual.
At the time of the explosion, 66 miners were working approximately 600 meters underground. The disaster added to a growing list of coal mining accidents in Iran, with at least four other incidents reported earlier that year.
