ALBAWABA - At least 10 people were killed, and 10 others were injured in a mass shooting in South Africa, the country's public broadcaster said on Sunday.
South Africa’s public broadcaster cited the police, a major shooting took place at the hands of unknown gunmen in the Bekkersdal township, west of Johannesburg.
Police told AFP that the reason behind the attack at Bekkersdal was not clear.
"Some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen," the police revealed in a statement.
"Ten people are dead. We don’t have a breakdown of who they are," Brig Brenda Muridili, police spokesperson for Gauteng province, added.
Earlier, the South Africa Police Service posted on X, "Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations together with Crime Detection Tracing Unit have launched a manhunt for the suspects involved in a multiple shooting incident during the early hours in Bekkersdal on Sunday, 21 December 2025. The incident has resulted in nine people being killed and 10 being injured."
It added that the attack happened just before 01:00 a.m., at the Tambo section, adding that reports declare that about 12 unknown suspects in a white kombi and a silver sedan opened fire at tavern patrons and continued to shoot randomly as they fled the scene. The tavern is licensed.
