Singapore is leading the way in the online travel revolution with the launch of the ‘YourSingapore’ web portal www.yoursingapore.com, which allows visitors to conceptualise and plan their own personal itinerary, in response to growing demand for more individualised travel.
The website is central to the city-state’s new destination brand - ‘YourSingapore’ - offering potential visitors a virtual tour of the island nation through spectacular multi-media content, and connecting them with local residents and previous travellers via virtual communities and real time blogs.
Before making their trip a reality, visitors can create their own itineraries on an interactive map of the island that highlights other key sights, attractions, and amenities along the way, as well as allowing users to book their own accommodation, activities, and flights online.
“In the past few years, the way people plan and book travel has fundamentally shifted from passive content consumption to the active engagement of individuals through digital and social media. This is particularly true in the Middle East, which is experiencing the world’s fastest Internet penetration growth rates,” said Jason Ong, Area Director for the Middle East and Africa, Singapore Tourism Board (STB).
“YourSingapore was developed in response to this growing influence of digital media and the rise of virtual communities, as well as consumer demands for personalised travel plans. It positions Singapore as a future-facing and inspiring destination that will appeal to the region’s tech-savvy traveller, who can take a virtual tour of Singapore before making their own trip a reality. We anticipate that the new brand and website will prove a great success in the Middle East,” Ong added.
Last year Singapore saw a 2.7 percent increase in visitors from the Middle East, with a total of 117,000 visitors arrivals from the region. STB is predicting record tourism numbers for 2010, forecasting total annual visitor arrivals to hit a record of between 11.5 million and 12.5 million by the end of the year – up from 9.7 million in 2009, with a corresponding increase in tourism receipts to S$17.5 – S$18.5 billion.
With the launch of www.yoursingapore.com visitors from the region will be able to share their thoughts on the sights, sounds, culture, and attractions of Singapore before, during, and after their trip through their own social networks, email, and blogs that can be linked to the website.
The ‘YourSingapore’ destination brand is an evolution from the successful ‘Uniquely Singapore’ brand and will be showcased at this year’s Arabian Travel Market, being held on 4-7 May at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
