Son of former Iranian president sentenced to 15 years in prison

Mehdi Hashemi Rafsanjani, son of former Iranian president Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of corruption Sunday, state media reported. 

Forty-five-year-old businessman Rafsanjani was charged for three separate corruption and security offenses by the Tehran Revolutionary Court that added to a total of 15 years. He has 20 days to appeal his sentence. 

Rafsanjani's father served two terms as president from 1989 to 1997 and is a close friend of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei

Reuters said media has reported Rafsanjani's previous arrests on corruption charges last year and in 2012.
