Residential and commercial infrastructure and roads will consume 47 percent of Abu Dhabi's land area by 2010, according to a feasibility study by the Abu Dhabi Municipality and Town Planning Department.

The study, cited by the Gulf News, was prepared by the Planning Department to assess future developments and projected population growth.

In a report, the department said an independent study indicated that the emirate would witness a rapid increase in land use compared to 1998 and 1990.

Construction of buildings, houses, roads and other infrastructure will be responsible for the development, said the report, cited by the paper.

The study also shows that Abu Dhabi will see a rapid increase in the number of vehicles on the road.

Referring to the present demographic situation, the report said the population of the capital and its suburbs increased from 485,000 in 1995 to 575,000 last year – Albawaba.com
