Two suicide bombers targeted Damascus' historic Marjeh Square Tuesday morning, Syria’s Al-Ikhbariya TV reported, adding that there were casualties.
Lebanon’s Al-Jadeed reported that both blasts took place outside a police disciplinary department in Marjeh Square in downtown Damascus.
Marjeh Square, also known as 'Martyrs Square,' is a major downtown area in Damascus. The square is home to the Syrian Ministry of Interior. In April of this year, 13 people died following an explosion at the square.
"It seems the terrorists have struck again," said a television presenter, using the regime's term to refer to rebels fighting President Bashar Assad's troops, according to AFP.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported the blasts, but said they were caused by explosives planted in the neighborhood rather than by suicide bombers.
"Several people were wounded by two explosive device blasts in Marjeh square in Damascus," the Britain-based Observatory told AFP.
