Syria on Thursday announced sharing the Palestinian people’s grief over the death of Palestinian Authority Chairman, Yasser Arafat.
Syria declared an official mourning for three days during which all flags over official institutions in the country and Syria’s embassies as well as diplomatic missions abroad would be put at half mast starting from Thursday.
According to an officlal statement, Syria "realizes the big loss in the absence of Yasser Arafat during these critical conditions which the Palestinian cause is passing through."
Syria "is very confident of the Palestinian people capabilities, along with their sincere leaderships, to boost national unity and continue struggle and sacrifices until they regain their full legitimate national rights," the statement said.
Arafat's ties with Syria have deteriorated since 1993 when he signed an interim peace deal with Israel - a move strongly opposed by Damascus. (albawaba.com)
