Syria's newly appointed UN peace envoy Staffan de Mistura will meet with the Security Council Friday in the latest effort to end the ongoing conflict, according to Agence France Presse.

AFP's diplomatic sources said that the meeting will represent the first opportunity for de Mistura and the Security Council to "discuss the way forward."

De Mistura replaces former envoy Lakhdar Brahimi who resigned in May after Syrian President Assad's announced plans for re-election during war. Brahimi also said his resignation came in response to failed peace talks in Geneva earlier this year.

The Italian-Swedish diplomat has previously held posts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

UN leadership hopes to renew peace talks between Syria's regime and opposition under de Mistura.
