Syrian government rockets struck a market in a rebel-held suburb in the Damascus province on Friday, killing 40 people and injuring 100, AFP reported.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Director Rami Abdel Rahman said heavy fire continued in the suburb in Eastern Ghouta after the deaths, which included a child.
The attack follows government airstrikes in the area that killed nine on Thursday, the monitor said.
Douma in Eastern Ghouta is the largest opposition stronghold and has been the target of constant regime airstrikes.
