Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is due in Jordan later Monday for talks with King Abdullah II on regional and international developments, Information Minister Saleh Kallab told AFP.

"The Syrian president is expected in Amman around noon time for talks with his majesty," Kallab said.

The pro-government Al Rai newspaper said the talks would focus on the launch of US and British attacks on Afghanistan in the wake of the September 11 terror strikes on New York and Washington.

The crippled Middle East peace process is also expected to figure high on the agenda of the two Arab leaders.

On Sunday Abdullah received Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa Miro, who is visiting Jordan to co-chair with Jordanian Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb a joint Syrian-Jordanian high committee.

Miro said Israel represents "state terrorism" and should not be part of the international coalition to fight against terrorism.

"Israel, by pursuing its aggressive and expansionist policies against the Palestinians, by shirking the resolutions provided by international law and by sabotaging all efforts for a fair and comprehensive peace in the region, is a perfect example of state terrorism," Miro said.

He also reiterated Syria's condemnation of the September 11 terror attacks against the United States and called for "an international conference to be convened by the United Nations to define terrorism and establish a distinction between terrorism and the right of peoples to resist occupation” -- AMMAN (AFP)
