Syrian Vice President Abdel-Halim Khaddam was due in Tehran on Tuesday to deliver a message to President Mohammad Khatami from his Syrian counterpart, Bashar Al Assad, reported the official Iranian news agency, IRNA.
Iran's Ambassador to Syria Hossein Sheikholeslam told IRNA on Monday that during his two-day visit, Khaddam would hold talks with Iranian officials on the critical situation in the region.
Sheikholeslam said the visit would be important given “the brutality of the Zionist regime.”
He said that under present conditions, the exchange of visits by Iranian and Syrian officials would be increased to bring about coordination and find suitable strategies to confront unexpected events.
He added that Sharon's language of threats and policy of assassination, as well as “international Zionism's support for his criminal acts" had made the situation in the region "more grave, thus fomenting crisis.”
Asked whether economic issues would also be raised during Khaddam's visit to Iran, Sheikholeslam said economy and commerce were solid bases of cooperation between Iran and Syria and had always been the main focus of talks between Iranian and Syrian officials, according to IRNA.
He described as "excellent" the level of talks between Iran and Syria and expressed hope that Iranian companies would actively participate in Damascus' international trade and industrial fair, slated for September.
He stressed that the necessary preparations had been made for Iranian public and private companies to attend the fair, said the agency – Albawaba.com
