Fierce fighting is ongoing between the Taliban and security forces in the capital of central Uruzgan province, an official said on Thursday.
Heavy clashes erupted this morning when the insurgents stormed into Tirinkot, a security official told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity.
If Special Forces’ reinforcements do not arrive soon, the provincial capital could fall to the militants, according to the source, who said the gun battles were 400 metres from the police headquarters.
Security forces had sought weapons from the police headquarters, but their demand was yet to be met, the official revealed.
As residents prepared to flee the embattled city, another official confirmed battles were underway in several parts of the provincial capital.
He claimed 40 security personnel had surrendered to the rebels.
A day earlier, the Provincial Council (PC) chief warned the city would fall into Taliban’s hands if Special Forces were not immediately dispatched.
Abdul Karim Khadimzai issued the warning as hundreds of Taliban attacked Tirinkot from three sides and heavy clashes were underway over the past few days.
