Taliban militants killed at least five and injured 31 others after storming a court complex in Afghanistan dressed in military uniformed, AFP reported Thursday.

The gunmen threw grenades in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif in an assault that comes shortly before the Taliban's fighting season. This will be the first season that Afghan security forces must fight the militants without NATO support, as US troops begin pulling out of the offensive.

The bodies of at least five dead and 31 wounded people were brought to the provincial public hospital following the attack, an official told AFP. Mohammad Faiz, a senior doctor at the hospital, said police, prosecutors, court staff, women and children were among those harmed.

The shootings followed an attack on NATO soldiers Wednesday, from which one American and the Afghan shooter were killed.

The US forces have slowed their withdrawal in Afghanistan to support Afghan troops' training, but they are no longer on the front lines.
