Thousands of polling station employees began casting their ballots Thursday morning across Lebanon, in a preliminary round of voting three days ahead of the countrywide Election Day.
Polls opened for employees at around 7 a.m. Thursday, and the polling stations maintained a “calm and organized atmosphere” later in the morning, the state-run National News Agency reported.
Observers from the Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections were seen standing inside the polling stations Thursday morning.
The polls are set to close at 7 p.m., the NNA reported.
Praising Thursday’s early voting, South Lebanon Governor Mansour Daou called on Lebanese to “practice their constitutional right to vote in a calm and democratic atmosphere.”
The polling station employee vote, as well as preliminary expat voting rounds over the weekend for Lebanese citizens abroad, are a prelude to the general election set for Sunday, when tens of thousands of voters are expected to head to the polls in the country’s first parliamentary race in nine years.
